Push notifications
Push is the only channel that lands on the lock screen. That is exactly why you have to earn it.
Asking for permission
iOS and recent Android versions both make users allow notifications. Show a short screen first that explains what they will get, then trigger the system prompt.
What to send
Send messages triggered by the user's own behaviour: a streak about to break, an order on its way, a reply waiting. Broadcast blasts are the fastest way to get muted.
Measure the cost
Track opt-outs and uninstalls after every campaign, not only opens.
